On-demand learning and development

Learning and development, both in personal and professional settings, are important to one’s growth. Employers have invested into L&D resources for decades in an effort to help their employees with career progression, which ultimately leads to business success.

However, with the rise of personalization is the workplace, employee expectations have changed. The idea of a one-size-fits-all learning and development program doesn’t work with what workers today want in this type of resource.

Over the last several years, a new trend has started to take over the L&D and training industries that is causing major disruptions: on-demand learning and development.

More and more companies are incorporating on-demand L&D tools and resources in their training programs. With this comes a level of personalization that meets the expectations of employees and increases the overall experience with career development.

However, to get a better sense of why on-demand learning is critical today, let’s explore a few reasons why this trend is taking over the L&D and HR industries.

Offering On-Demand Training Boosts Employee Engagement

Employees today care more about learning and development than ever before. The main reason for this is due to the ease of access to training materials both at work and outside of it.

A common problem for L&D programs is that employee participation and engagement can be low. This can be due to a few reasons, such as a lack of personalization and employee input into which content they can take. Additionally, some companies only offer training course at certain periods of time during the year, when some employees could be busy with projects.

This is why on-demand learning is so valuable to both employees and employers. These resources can be utilized whenever and on whichever device an employee wants. This enables employees to pick training courses that are relevant to their careers and skill sets when they have sufficient time to take them.

By offering on-demand learning, employers greatly increase employee engagement in learning and development programs, which is a win-win for everyone involved.

Personalization Through On-Demand Training is Critical to L&D Today

We have already touched on the importance of personalization for employees. Everything from recruiting and onboarding, to benefit packages and the overall employee experience are now expected to incorporate some degree of personalization.

Companies shouldn’t treat learning and development programs any differently, and incorporating on-demand content can help bring personalization into company training initiatives.

While there will still need to be certain courses and training that are mandatory for all employees to take, sticking to a one-size-fits-all approach to career development and L&D programs will not get the results employers or employees are looking for.

Employers who offer on-demand training materials to their employees stand to gain as employees take courses that help advance the skills that are unique to each individual’s role and work. It really is becoming a must-have for modern L&D programs.

Older Methods of Learning and Development Aren’t Meeting the Needs of Workers

Josh Bersin, Principal and Founder of Bersin by Deloitte, has said for a few years that major disruption was coming to the training and L&D markets. He mentions that the main cause of this was that older methods and approaches to employee training weren’t getting positive results.

He explores this further by pointing out two reasons for the poor results. One is that Learning Management Systems (LMS) used by many companies are older and lack levels of personalization. Another is that these LMS tools really only manage and offer compliance related training.

Josh goes on to say that innovative technology is emerging that is changing and disrupting the LMS market. A lot these resources are putting a greater focus in on-demand learning and are incorporating them into their software.

As these new technologies become more common-place amongst larger organizations, small businesses, too, can find ways to boost their L&D programs by incorporating on-demand learning.

On-Demand Learning and Development Will Only Grow in Importance

As employees continue to take a proactive approach to learning and development, the importance of offering on-demand training services will only grow.

Companies who offer on-demand learning as part of their L&D efforts will be able to improve employee engagement, as well as the overall employee experience. On-demand learning can also be a valuable tool for recruiting new talent and will help to lower employee turnover.

Ultimately, the results of a great L&D program that incorporates on-demand training, buy-in from senior leadership, utilizes an employee mentorship program, and offers a level of personalization will help employees grow and progress in their careers.
